Rasam / Spicy Tamarind Soup


The most simple recipe and which tastes so good anytime. I just love the flavor, aroma, taste and everything about rasam 🙂 There are so many variants of rasam but this one is my favorite.

Ingredients:

Tamarind –  big lemon sized soaked in 3 cup water for 10 minutes
or
Tamarind paste – 1tbsp mixed in 3 cup of water
Black mustard seed – 1 tsp
Fenugreek seed – 1/4 tsp
Oil – 2 tsp
Cilantro/Coriander leaves – 2 stem
Pinch of Asafoetida
Salt to taste

To Grind:

Cumin seed – 1tsp
Black Peppercorn – 1/2 tsp
Garlic – 1-2 clove (optional)
Tomato – 1
Cilantro leaves – handfull

Grind the above ingredients into a very coarse paste.

Method:

Heat oil in a pan add mustard & fenugreek seed once after it splutters.

Add the grind spices and immediately add the tamarind pulp. now add the asafoetida.

Cook for 5-7 minutes or until the foam gathers on the top.

Switch off the heat, add salt & close the lid.

Rasam is ready 🙂
