Kerala Kadala Curry/ Black Garbanzo Beans Curry

If I’m cooking on a thursday then I would definitely end up cooking a dish with garbanzo beans.. anything from a simple salad or sundal or to a curry. Today I’m making a kadala curry a popular dish from Kerela. I still remember my hostel days where my friends from kerela brags about puttu & kadala curry. Their description will make my mouth watery!!! I got this recipe from my neighbour and I love it!!!

Ingredients:

Black Garbanzo beans – 2 cups soaked in water overnight
Onions – 2 finely chopped
Chilly powder – 2 tsp
Coriander Powder – 3 tsp
Green chillies – 2 slit lengthwise
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
Curry leaves – 10
Salt to taste
Oil – 1tbsp
Coconut oil – 1tsp for flavor

To grind:

Coconut – 1 cup grated (Fresh or Frozen)
Shallots – 2 finely chopped
Fennel seed – ¼ tsp
Peppercorn – ½ tsp
Cinnamon stick – 1

Method:

Soak the beans overnight and pressure cook it until soft it takes around 4 – 5 whistles.

Heat ½ oil in a pan and roast the fennel seed, peppercorn & cinnamon stick for a minute, then add the onion and cook for 2-3 mins and finally add the grated coconut and cook for 2-3 mins. Cool and grind into a smooth paste with little water.

Heat oil in a Heavy bottomed deep pan, add mustard let it splutter, add the curry leaves, onion & green chilly. Saute until the onion gets a brown color & add the chilly powder, coriander powder and some salt.

Add two cups of water and bring to oil. Now its time to add the ground masala and the beans. Keep the flame low and cook until the mixture thicken up. add some more salt and coconut oil and mix well.Turn off the heat and this goes best with puttu or just a side for chappati, appam or dosa too.
