Buttermilk Curry/ Morr Kulambu

This recipe makes me all nostalgic and I’m remembering my childhood and school days. This is one of my favorite dish and I just love the way my mom makes it. My mom cooks this dish once in a month with Paruppu vadai (Lentil dumplings). The vadai soaked in the curry is just yumm and heaven.. I always take it in a bowl and have it as a soup..yumm!

Buttermilk – 4 cups
Black mustard seed – 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Raw mango, Okra or Winter melon – 2 cups chopped
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Oil – 2 tsp
A sprig of curry leaves
A pinch of Asafoetida
Salt to taste

To grind:
Shredded coconut – 1cup
Yellow pigeon peas or Toor dal – 1tbsp soaked in water
Green chilly – 4 or 5 according to spice level
Cumin seed – 1 tsp
Ginger – 1″ skinned
Pepper – 2-4
Grind the above ingredients with little water into smooth paste.


Heat oil in a deep pan, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds and curry leaves once it splutters, add the vegetable, I used some winter melon & sliced raw mangoes. Cook for 5-7 minutes. Add the ground paste and asafoetida and cook for less than a minute add the buttermilk, season with enough salt and switch off the flame once the mixture gets hot. Note: Do not cook the curry until it boils beacause it looses its taste & the water separates. Just make sure the mixture is in the high flame for 2 minutes. Garnish with cilantro leaves and add some vadas to it.
